I keep meaning to put some thoughts together (e.g. in the form of a 'proper' blog post) on the interesting subject of "post-growth society", but I keep getting sidetracked...
Admittedly, my knowledge of "economic theory" etc. is pretty weak, and I kind of assumed that one of the people we have to 'blame' for the 'growth mantra' is Adam Smith, but according to the interesting article here, Adam Smith imagined a 200-year phase of economic growth followed by a steady state! See also Wikipedia page here, which refers to a stage where "the economy has reached its stationary state".
